Lobos Swept by Boise State

BOISE, Idaho — Led by sophomore Kaitlynn Biassou with 11 kills, The University of New Mexico volleyball team fell in straight sets on Saturday to wrap up its series with the Broncos.

Boise State (8-2) swept the series Friday and Saturday, taking both matches 3-0. The Lobos (3-7) are 1-2 over their last three matchups and are finally set to return home on Friday, March 12 for a two-game series against UNLV.

While Biassou led the Lobos on the attack, sophomore Chloe Clark powered UNM’s offense with 12 assists and freshman libero Jazlynn Soriano led the back row with 21 digs.

The Lobos fell 25-16, 25-14 and 25-14 over the three sets but despite the lopsided score, UNM held tough before the Broncos finished out each match on an accumulation of significant runs.

In set one, the Broncos led by no more than four, including at 10-6, before the Lobos came back. New Mexico outscored Boise State 9-4 to tie the game 14-14. It was then, however, that BSU gained momentum. The Broncos finished out set one on an 11-2 run to take the first set.

It was New Mexico that took the first point of set two on a kill by freshman Tori Tua who finished with six on the day. A block from Tua and freshman Emma Smith made it 2-1 in favor of the Lobos, but it was the last lead for UNM. Boise State responded with three straight to take a 4-3 advantage.

With New Mexico trailing by just one, 7-8, the Broncos went on an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach. With the Lobos trailing 11-20, the teams traded points, but UNM was unable to close the gap.

Boise State took a commanding lead quickly in set three with a 6-0 run to open the frame on the way to the three-set win.

The Lobos are set to return to action on March 12 in their first home match of the season against UNLV. The Lobos and the Runnin’ Rebels will play two matches over two days.
