Lobos Dispatch CSU-Pueblo 7-0

PUEBLO, Colo. — Led by a perfect day from Yue Lin “Polly” Chen, the Lobos stayed red hot to open the season in the general warmth of the CSU-Pueblo indoor courts, defeating the host ThunderWolves 7-0 to run their record to 2-0.

The Lobos, who were to continue the trip with a trek to Lubbock, Texas for matches Sunday and Monday will move those to February 20 and 21 due to the impending winter weather due into Lubbock.

It was single digits outside, but unlike Thursday’s match in Denver where UNM and Metro State finished their match in the snow and 19 degree temperatures outdoors, the teams were able to play inside at CSUP’s indoor facility, which has three courts.

UNM ripped through doubles, sweeping the top two doubles matches with some new pairings.  Natasha Munday and Hsuan Huang won 6-0 at No. 1 and My Kageyama and Chen won 6-0 at No. 2.  That started a perfect day for Chen, who also won her singles match 6-0, 6-0.  The No. 3 doubles match didn’t finish but Danielle Quevedo and Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang had a 4-1 lead when the doubles point was clinched.

In singles, UNM against had no problem, winning all 12 sets and losing just a total of seven games over the 12 sets.

In the opening three singles matches, Munday, playing No. 1 again, won 6-1, 6-0 to make it 2-0.  Hsuan Huang won 6-0, 6-0 and No. 3 and that was followed by Chen’s double-love sets to give UNM the win and a 4-0 lead.  From there, the bottom half of the draw took the courts.  Albie Huang earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 and Sataho Toriumi, playing her first singles match of the season, won at No. 4 6-2, 6-1, making it 6-0.

At No. 6, Albuquerque native Allison Romero made her collegiate debut and had a successful run with a 6-1, 6-0 win, giving UNM the sweep.

The Lobos will now beat the storm and return home before heading to Lubbock for matches on Saturday and Sunday.  UNM will face Abilene Christian at 11 a.m. Mountain Time in Lubbock on Saturday before facing host Texas Tech on Sunday at 10 a.m. Mountain Time.

NOTES:  UNM is 2-0 on the season for the first time since the 2016 season … Kageyama and Quevedo sat out the singles portion of the match … it was UNM’s first 7-0 win since March 9, 2019 over UTEP.
