ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The drama was ramped down a notch from Saturday’s thrilling 4-3 win over BYU, but the fun was still there in full force.  The New Mexico men’s tennis team took the doubles point and used that to propel it to a 6-1 victory over Northern Colorado, UNM’s second straight win on the weekend.

The win pushed UNM to 2-4 on the season and Northern Colorado dropped to 2-5.  UNM’s next match is on Sunday when the Lobos host Utah at 1 p.m. at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium in the end of a big weekend for the program.  On Saturday at halftime of UNM’s men’s basketball game with UNLV, the 2019 men’s tennis Mountain West champions will be honored with a presentation of its championship rings.

After the tensesness of Saturday’s win, Sunday’s match was relatively easy as UNM won it in just 1:56.  The Lobos took the doubles point, as UNM had all three sets in their favor.  Head coach Ben Dunbar mixed up the doubles partners, and the move worked perfectly.  Raul Dobai and Dominic West played at No. 1 doubles and cruised to a 6-2 win while Stepan Holis and Alex Maggs won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.  UNM switched up No. 3 doubles and Sergio Molina and Nicolas Prieto were up 4-2 at the clinch.

From there it was all UNM.  All six Lobos took their opening sets, and it quickly became a race to four. Raul Dobai was the first to finish, winning 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, and that was followed by Sergio Molina at No. 3 singles.  Molina, who won 10 of his final 12 games yesterday, stayed hot, winning 6-1, 6-3.  Molina has now won 22 of his last 28 games.  The clinching win was when Stephan Holis took down Julian Kenzlers 6-3, 6-0.  That clinched it, but both teams had decided beforehand to play it out.

Dominic West made it 5-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.  Rafael Abdulsalam won at No. 6 singles, his second straight win, winning 6-1, 6-4.  The only match left was at No. 5 singles, as Alex Maggs won his first set 6-4, and then lost his second 6-2.  He and Thomas Pudney were 1-1 in the third when it switched to a 10-point super-set, and Pudney prevailed 10-2, giving the Bears their only point of the match.

NOTES:  West’s win was his first of the spring … Jake Trondson and Facundo Bermejo were given the day off … UNM took the doubles point for only the second time this season.
