Lobos Host Don Kirby; Sends Runners to Husky Classic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The University of New Mexico track and field team has another big weekend ahead of them as the Lobos host the Don Kirby Elite Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center while five Lobos will be in Seattle, Wash., at the Husky Classic.

Starting this Thursday, the Lobos will host schools such as Oregon, Colorado, UCLA, Utah, California, Arizona State, Washington, Washington State, Stanford, SMU, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. There will also be a heavy Mountain West presence with Air Force, Colorado State, Utah State, San José State, UNLV, San Diego State and Fresno State at the two-day meet.

Stanford, Oregon, Colorado and Washington are ranked eighth through 11th in the latest USTCCCA national women’s rankings with UNM 12th, while on the men’s side, Oregon enters the meet ranked 11th and Colorado 17th.

The meet will begin at 1 p.m. MT with the women’s long jump, women’s weight throw and men’s pole vault, while the track events begin at 2:30 p.m. MT with the men’s open 400-meters. Friday’s events will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the women’s shot put and the track events will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the qualifying round of the women’s 60-meter hurdles.

This will be the fourth consecutive week that the Lobos will be hosting with two more meets still on the schedule at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Heading into the meet, the Lobos have seven of the top results in the Mountain West with Aidan Quinn (triple jump), Tanner Battikha (long jump), Weini Kelati (5000-meter, 3000-meter, mile), Carlos Salcido (400-meter) and Jay Griffin (200-meter).

On a national level, the Lobos have five runners in the top 12 in three events with Kelati second in the 5000-meters and 3000-meters, and third in the mile, Emily Martin 10th in the 5000-meters and Adva Cohen 11th in the 5000-meters.

Cohen, Martin, Gracelyn Larkin, Hannah Nuttall and William Fuller will be in Seattle running in the Husky Classic on Friday with Cohen, Larkin, Nuttall in the 3000-meter and Martin and Fuller in the 5000-meter. The 3000-meter is scheduled to run at 8:30 p.m. MT with the women’s 5000-meter at 9:10 p.m. MT and men’s 5000-meter at 9:30 p.m. MT.
