Arcaya, Choi Tied For 1st Through 2 Rounds in Hawaii

LIHUE, Hawaii —– Sophomores Ignacio Arcaya and Sam Choi are sitting in a tie for first place after two rounds of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawaii on Friday after a five-stroke improvement by the Lobos lands the team in third after 36 holes. The sophomores are two of just four players to hold a score of four under, 140 entering the third round.

Arcaya improved his first-round score of 74 (+2) by eight strokes as he registered a new season low round of 66 (-6) in round two, advancing 37 spots on the leaderboard. He shot an outstanding seven birdies on the day to bring his grand total to 11, marking the most recorded by any competitor so far on the tournament. Arcaya is tied for third in par-3 scoring with an average of 3.00 (E) and his par-4 average of 4.00 (E) is tied for fourth overall.

Choi remained consistent in round two as he matched his first-round total of 70 (-2). Choi’s combined 26 pars is tied for fourth overall while is par-3 average of 2.88 (-1) and par-5 average of 4.38 (-5) are tied for second and third, respectively.

Freshman Albert Boneta follows for the Lobos on the leaderboard as he is tied for 27th at one over, 145. Boneta shot a 74 (+2) in round two to follow his first-round score 71 (-1).  Boneta is tied for second in par-5 scoring (4.25, -6) and his nine birdies, five in round one and four in round two, are tied for third in the category.

Junior Galven Green is tied for 51st at four over, 148 after two rounds, having shot back-to-back scores of 74 (+2). Sitting just one stroke behind at 149 (+5) is New Mexico’s individual senior Sam Dickey who saw a seven-stroke improvement between rounds one and two, shooting 78 (+6) and 71 (-1), respectively.

Redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair shot a two over, 74 in round two as he shaved two strokes off of his first-round score of 76 (+4). Sinclair’s average of 2.88 (-1) on par-3s is tied for second overall and his 23 pars is tied for seventh in the category. Sinclair is tied for 76th at 150 (+6) heading into round three.

As a team, the Lobos are sitting third out of 21 squads at three under, 573. The team improved their first-round score of 289 (+1) by five strokes in round two as they shot a 284 (-4) on the day. UNM is tied for first in birdies (37) and tied for second in both par-3 scoring (3.10, +4) and par-5 scoring (4.55, -18).

New Mexico is sitting just four strokes behind first-place No. 10 Texas A&M (569, -7) and two strokes behind second-place No. 15 BYU (571, -5). The No. 40 Lobos are out-shooting four Golfstat top-50 ranked teams through two rounds: fifth-place No. 43 Illinois (577, +1), sixth-place No. 6 Arizona (579, +3), T8th-place No. 28 California (587, +11) and 12th-place No. 14 North Carolina (589, +13).

The third and final round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate will tee off on Saturday at 11 a.m. MT (8 a.m. Hawaii time) with a shotgun start.
