Lobos Tied For Fourth, Choi Seventh in Hawaii

LIHUE, Hawaii — Sophomore Sam Choi of The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is sitting just one stroke out of first place through round one of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate after registering a two under, 70 to land in a tie for seventh. As a team, the Lobos are sitting tied for fourth at one over, 289 to sit just two strokes out of first place.

Choi remained consistent throughout the day, registering 14 pars and three birdies. His 14 pars tied for fourth overall in the category and he tied for second in both par-3 and par-5 scoring with averages of 3.00 (E) and 4.25 (-3), respectively.

Sitting just one stroke behind on the leaderboard is freshman Albert Boneta who registered a one under, 71 in the round to finish the day tied for 10th. Boneta carded an outstanding five birdies on the day, tying for third in the category, and he matched Choi with his par-5 average of 4.25 (-3).

Junior Galven Green and sophomore Ignacio Arcaya each shot a two over, 74 in the round to tie for 38th. Arcaya’s par-3 average of 3.00 (E) tied for second in the category while Green’s 12 pars on the day tied for sixth overall.

Redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair shot a par-3 average of 2.75 (-1) to tie for first in the category. Sinclair wrapped up round one tied for 75th at four over, 76. Trailing by two strokes was UNM’s individual competitor, senior Sam Dickey, who shot a six over, 78 in the round.

As a team, the Lobos had a solid first-round showing as they finished the round second overall in par-3 scoring (3.05, +1) and third in par-5 scoring (4.60, -8). UNM registered the third-most birdies in the competition and its 52 pars tied for seventh.

UNM shot a one over, 289 to tie with UC Irvine for the fourth-place spot. Sitting one stroke ahead at 288 (E) is No. 10 Texas A&M while No. 15 BYU and UNCW are tied for first at one under, 287. The Lobos are sitting one stroke ahead of No. 43 Illinois (290, +2) and four strokes ahead of No. 6 Arizona (293, +5).

Round two is set to tee off Friday at 11 a.m. MT (8:00 a.m. Hawaii time) and will be followed by round three on Saturday.
