Women's Tennis Opens Fall Schedule at Bedford Cup
ALBUQUERQUE , N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team will head north to open the 2019 fall schedule as the team will travel to Colorado Springs for the second annual ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains, running Thurs.-Sun., Sept. 12-15, at the Air Force Outdoor Intercollegiate Tennis Courts. Action begins each day at 9 a.m. Mountain Time.
Admission is free all four days. Parking is first-come-first serve in the east and south lots by the Field House. The tennis courts are to the west, past the Falcon Athletic Center.
The tournament will be a good opener for New Mexico and head coach Vicky Maes who enters her first full season with the team after serving as the acting and interim head coach last year. Maes has a roster of eight, and all eight will compete in a crowded field that features eight schools. Along with UNM and defending 2018 champion Air Force, Colorado State, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah and Wyoming will field teams.
Five of UNM’s top six from 2018-19 return in Bronte Murgett, Natasha Munday, Danielle Quevedo, Yue Lin “Polly” Chen and Hsiang-Web “Albie” Huang, losing just last year’s lone senior Ruth Copas. The Lobo have added three, including a pair of talented transfers in Sara Kuuttila-Webbert and Myu Kageyama. Kuuttila-Webbert comes to UNM from Michigan State, and is an Albuquerque native with ties to the program, as her sister Anna Kuuttila played at UNM from 2010-14. Kageyama is a transfer from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Joining them is Canadian freshman Alisia Manolescu.
Last year UNM went 3-1 in the Mountain Division, tying for the title, and 12-9 overall.
