Lobos Finish Seventh at Mountain West Championship

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished seventh at the Mountain West Championships on Wednesday after posting its lowest score of the competition in round three. Sophomore Caroline Jansson finished tied for ninth individually to mark her first top-10 finish of the season.

Jansson shot a combined score of 12 over, 228 after carding her lowest score of the tournament in round three as she shot a two over, 74 after shooting back-to-back scores of 77 (+5) in the first two rounds. The sophomore led her team in par-4 scoring with an average of 4.27 (+8) and her two birdies in both the first and third rounds marked the most birdies on the squad (4). Jansson and senior Darian Zachek each registered 35 pars in their three rounds to finish tied for third overall in the category.

Zachek followed for New Mexico as she also shot her best score of the tournament in round three with a five over, 77 to finish tied for 17th with a score of 17 over, 233. The senior led the team on par-3s as her average of 3.17 (+2) tied for third across the competition.

Trailing by six strokes and finishing in a tie for 32nd was senior Emma Edwards who shot a 239 (+23) over the tournament. Junior Reva Morris recorded a nine over, 81 in round three to bring her three-round total to a 245 (+29) to land her tied for 39th. Edwards brought in 29 pars over her three rounds of work while Morris carded 28.

Freshman Tiana Cruz led the team in par-5 scoring as her average of 4.92 (-1) in the category tied for fourth overall. Cruz wrapped up the tournament in 42nd place with a score of 34 over, 250.

As a team, the Lobos took off eight strokes between the first and third rounds and they improved their score with each round of action. UNM shot a first-round score of 318 (+30), a second-round score of 317 (+29) and a third-round score of 310 (+22) to bring its combined total to a 945 (+81). The Lobos’ eight-stroke improvement allowed them to jump up one spot on the leaderboard to finish in seventh place after ending the first two rounds in eighth.

It was San Diego State that took home the championship with a team score of 904 (+40). Nevada trailed by just one stroke as it shot a 41 over, 905 after recording a 297 (+9) in round three. UNLV finished third with a score of 911 (+47).

Fresno State’s Brigitte Thibault took home the individual title as she carded a one over, 217 and led the competition in par-4 scoring with an average of 4.03 (+1). Thibault registered 11 pars over her three rounds of work to tie for second in the category. Fresno State, San Diego State and San José State each had two individuals finish in the top-10.

Overall, the Lobos wrapped up regular-season play with three team top-10 finishes and two individual top-10 finishes.
