Lobos to Compete at Bryan Clay Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The University of New Mexico track and field team returns to competition this Thursday and Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif.

UNM will have a total of 90 entries in the meet in 28 events. Of that, 69 are track entries with 18 events and 21 are field entries in 10 events.

Three of the track events will be held on Thursday with the Lobos running Jonny Glen in the steeplechase to begin the day at 4 p.m. MT. Natasha Bernal, Alexandra Harris and Catrina Thomas will run in the women’s steeplechase at 5:20 p.m. MT and the Lobos will have eight entries in the 5000-meter starting at 7 p.m. MT. Jared Garcia will be the sole male runner in the event, with the women running Johanna Briscoe, Adva Cohen, Chamique DuBoise, Juanita Johnson, Weini Kelati, Isabella Nellos and Charlotte Prouse.

The remainder of the track events and the entirety of the field events are set for Friday beginning at 10 a.m. MT with the men’s long jump, women’s long jump and men’s 4×100-meter relay.

Several Lobos will be competing in multiple field events, among them Tanner Battikha and Aidan Quinn in both the men’s long jump and triple jump, Camillo Dunninger in the pole vault, 110-meter hurdles and long jump, Diamond Black, Cathilee Mullings in the long jump and triple jump and Shannon Fritz in the high jump and pole vault.

The UNM women enter the invitational ranked 12th in the nation by USTFCCCA, tying the highest ranking in program history on the women’s side.  The women were ranked 12th in week seven in 2018 and in week six of 2016.

UNM is coming off its home meet, the Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational, where the Lobos won 10 events, posted 10 runner-up finishes, and nine that placed in the top three. 

The Lobos competed at this meet last season with successful results for multiple individuals. Larimar Rodriguez (800m), Gavin Sleeter (800m), Battikha (long jump) and Allison Mady (shot put) all set personal bests, while Bernal and Sophie Eckel all produced fast ties in the 5000-meter run.
