Women's Golf Heads to PING / ASU Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team will be back in action this weekend as it heads to Phoenix, Ariz. for the PING / ASU Invitational hosted by Arizona State this Friday, March 29 through Sunday, March 31. The three-day tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,430-yard Papago Golf Course for the first time in tournament history after being played at the ASU Karsten Course for the first 32 years of its existence.

The field for the competition is made up of 15 squads including four top-10 ranked teams (Golfstat rankings): No. 1 USC, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 UCLA and No. 10 Arizona. The remainder of the field includes host Arizona State, Colorado, Denver, Furman, Georgia, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon and Washington.

Of the teams competing over the weekend, the Lobos are the sole Mountain West squad while seven of the teams are part of the Pac-12 conference. UCLA sits in second in the Pac-12 as it is averaging 288.03 in 32 rounds while shooting just 0.41 vs par and carding five wins on the season. Stanford follows in third with an average of 289.33 in 30 rounds and four team wins. Arizona and Arizona State follow in fourth and fifth place in the conference, averaging 290.15 and 291.77, respectively.  

While Arizona State has yet to card a win on the year, the Sun Devils have taken first at the PING / ASU Invitational 20 times throughout the tournament’s history.

UNM enters the competition following a 13th-place finish at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona. Junior Reva Morris recorded a personal-best finish at the tournament as her three-round score of eight over, 224 put her in 15th out of 92 competitors. As a team, the Lobos shot a 65 over, 929 as they improved two spots on the leaderboard throughout the competition.

Round one of the PING / ASU Invitational is set to tee off on Friday at 7:00 a.m. MT followed by round two on Saturday and round three on Sunday.
