Swimming Concludes Season at CSCAA Championship

CLEVELAND, Ohio– After a three-day meet at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship, The University of New Mexico swim team concluded its 2018-19 season on Saturday with a team total of 123.5 points.

The Lobos finished in 20th-place out of 47 teams that scored in the championship meet. 

Hedda Øritsland was the only Lobo to advance to a final on the day, which came in the opening event of the 100-yard IM. The freshman swam 57.06 in the prelims and later swam a time of 57.87 to finish ninth and add the final 14 points to UNM’s team total.

Klara Farkas and Mari Aoki also competed in the event, swimming a 58.83  and 59.68, respectively, but did not advance to a final. 

Aoki later swam in the 200-yard backstroke, registering a time of 2:07.69, while Brooke Zukoswki closed the meet in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.78.

In the three-day meet, Øritsland was the top point-getter for UNM, while also recording the Lobos only event win. 

The Norway native scored in three individual events, earning 57 points, while also participating in two relays that scored an additional 18 points.

UNM had a total of four swimmers, including Øritsland, who tallied points in multiple events.

Klara Farkas was the second-highest point-getter with 20 points in two individual events, followed closely by Katie Pollock’s 19 points in two events. Asami Terada scored 9.50 in two events.

However, Øritsland, Farkas and Pollock were all involved in the two relay teams that scored in the meet, the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay, with Aoki joining the trio in the 800 and Zukowski in the 200.
