Edwards, Zachek Pace Lobos Through Round One in Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team wrapped up round one of competition on Monday at the Rebel Beach Invitational in Las Vegas however, all 16 squads were forced to pause round two due to loss of daylight. 

Round two of the tournament will pick back up on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. MT and will be directly followed by round three.

ROUND 1 RESULTS

The Lobos finished round one in ninth place in the tough field and were led by seniors Emma Edwards and Darian Zachek who both shot four over, 76, and ended the round tied for 28th. Zachek had a standout performance as she posted the most pars in the round (15), tying with Oregon’s Petra Salko, while Edwards led the tournament in par-3 scoring with an average of 2.50 (-2), tying with Virginia’s Anna Redding.

The pair ended round one just five strokes out of third place (-1) and eight strokes away from the tournament leader, UNLV’s Elizabeth Prior (-4).

Junior Reva Morris trailed her teammates by just one stroke, registering a 77 (+5) with 13 pars and a birdie in the round. Sophomore Caroline Jansson and freshman Kamie Hamada followed by two strokes, both recording scores of seven over, 79. Morris finished up round one tied for 42nd, while Jansson and Hamada were tied for 59th.

Leading the tournament in round one was UNLV and San José State which both posted two over, 290. Arizona followed by one stroke, shooting a team-score of 291 (+3).

As a team, UNM posted a 20-over, 308 and finished the first round six strokes behind eighth-place Long Beach State.

With all squads through at least 16 holes in round two, the Lobos are in 11th on the leaderboard while Arizona has taken the overall lead. Results for round two are expected shortly after the action begins on Tuesday.
