Lobos Drop to Fifth in Day Two of Invite

DALLAS, TEXAS — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team finished day two of competition at the SMU Invitational on Friday and is currently sitting in fifth-place with 301.5 points.

The Lobos were able to notch seven top-twelve finishes during Friday’s portion of competition, including two top-five finishes. In the 800-yard free relay, sophomores Hedda Øritsland and Bryndis Bolladottir along with freshmen Camila Batista and Olivia Bishop grabbed the fourth-place spot after finishing with a time of 7:24.12. In the final, the squad was able to knock off an impressive eighteen seconds from its preliminary time.

Øritsland and Bishop contributed to another fourth-place finish for UNM, this time in the 200-yard medley relay.  Senior Asami Terada and freshman Nicholle Toh were also members of the squad that swam in 1:43.25.

UNM also had a solid performance from sophomore Mari Aoki, who shaved off nearly five seconds of her preliminary time in the 400-yard IM, capturing the tenth-place spot with a time of 4:24.87.

Along with her strong performance as a member of the 800-yard free relay, Bolladottir had a solid showing in the 200-yard free, finishing with a time of 1:50.69, good for tenth.

Other notable performances came from Terada in the 100-yard breast (1:04.44) as well as freshman Josie Carpenter in the 400-yard IM (4:27.85). Both performances resulted in eleventh-place finishes for the Lobos. UNM also garnered a twelfth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:46.42. The squad was made up of seniors Breanna Wiercinski and Talia Passarelli, sophomore Bolladottir and freshman Aleksandra Tomaszek. 

Currently leading the competition after two days is LSU with 679.5 points. 

The Lobos will close-out day three of competition tomorrow, Nov. 23 beginning at 9 a.m. MT inside SMU’s Robson and Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.
