Swim and Dive Wraps-Up Day One in Fresno
FRESNO, CALIF. — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team finished fifth through the first day of competition at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational in Fresno, Calif. on Friday. Through day one, the Lobos are just 8.5 points behind PAC-12 contender Washington State with 240 points.
The Lobos notched 11 top-10 finishes on the day, including three in the top five. Highlighting the day was freshman Olivia Bishop, who clinched the second-place spot out of a competitive field of 39 in the 200 yard freestyle. Bishop touched the wall with a time of 1:50.99, less than three quarters of a second behind the first-place finisher. Bishop was also a member of three separate relay teams for UNM, each finishing in the top ten in their respective events.
Freshman Nicholle Toh also had a strong performance in her inaugural start as a Lobo, securing a third place finish in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 55.56.
In the three-meter diving event, senior Natasha Dark posted a solid showing, gaining 14 points for the Lobos with a score of 241.50, good for fifth place. Sophomore Daphne Scheck finished seventh with a score of 236.95, followed by junior Hannah Tiendas in eighth with a score of 231.75. Sophomore Jocelyn Gallais captured the 10th spot with a score of 222.70.
Sophomores Bryndis Bolladottir and Mari Aoki also performed well in their respective events, with Bolladottir taking eighth in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.82 and Aoki claiming 10th in the 400 yard IM, touching the wall at 4:30.86.
UNM had three top ten finishes in the relay events, including seventh place in the 800 yard freestyle (7:49.73), eighth in the 200 yard freestyle (1:38.38) and tenth in the 200 yard medley (1:48.03). Freshman Bishop was a leading member of each squad, swimming with sophomore Bolladottir as well as fellow freshmen Josie Carpenter and Camila Batista in the 800 yard free, seniors Breanna Wiercinski, Talia Passarelli and freshman Kailee Puetz in the 200 yard free and with senior Asami Terada and freshmen Andrea Mariscal and Toh in the 200 yard medley.
Cal sits in first after day one, followed by SDSU, Fresno State and Washington State. New Mexico is currently positioned in fifth, with San José State in sixth.
Day two will begin Saturday morning at 11 a.m. MT with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 800 freestyle.
