Choi in Third, Lobos Seventh After Two Rounds in Texas

CARROLLTON, TEXAS — Sophomore Sam Choi of The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished round two in third place at the Maridoe Intercollegiate hosted by North Texas on Monday. Choi improved 18 spots on the leaderboard as he chopped five strokes off of his first-round score to finish the day just three strokes out of first-place.

Choi shot a two under, 70 in the second round after a 75 (+3) in round one, to bring his combined total to a one over, 145. Choi is one of just three competitors to have registered a 70 (-2) so far in the competition and one of five to have shot scores at or below 70. Additionally, Choi registered an outstanding six birdies on the day and is currently leading the team in pars (24).

Redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair also improved his score in round two as he shot a 74 (+2) to improve by two strokes bring his total to 150 (+6). He continues to lead the competition in par-5 scoring as his average of 4.38 (-5) is tied for first while his total of nine birdies is just two behind the tournament leader (11). Sinclair is sitting in a tie for 16th after improving 11 spots on the leaderboard through two rounds.

Sophomore Ignacio Arcaya follows for the Lobos as his total of nine over, 153 puts him in a tie for 33rd after leading UNM with a score of 73 (+1) on Sunday. Competing as an individual, senior Sam Dickey finished the day tied for 55th, shooting a two-round score of 16 over, 160. Dickey has registered 21 pars so far in the competition while Arcaya has raked in 20. The tournament leader sits just a few pars ahead with a two-round total of 26.

Junior Galven Green and freshman Albert Boneta hold scores of 17 over, 161 as the duo is tied for 57th overall.

As a team, the Lobos finished the day in seventh out of 12 squads with a score of 30 over, 606. UNM is just just six strokes away from second place, a tie held by host North Texas, Arkansas State and Texas A&M (600, +24), and two strokes away from fifth, a tie between San Francisco and Washington (606, +24). SMU continues to lead the competition as it’s two-round total of 15 over, 591 gives the Mustangs a nine-stroke advantage over second-place.

Individually, the top three spots on the leaderboard are all within four strokes of one another. SMU’s Noah Goodwin holds first with a score of two under, 142 while second is held by UTEP’s Eduardo Gonzalez who is even at 144. Choi represents New Mexico in the third-place spot with his score of one over, 145.

The third and final round of the Maridoe Intercollegiate will take place on Tuesday with a shotgun start on the first and tenth tee of the course at the Maridoe Golf Club at 7:30 a.m. MT.
