Arcaya Paces Lobos Through Round One in Texas

CARROLLTON, TEXAS — Sophomore Ignacio Arcaya of The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished tied for seventh out of 66 competitors after round one of the Maridoe Intercollegiate hosted by North Texas on Sunday. The sophomore led New Mexico as the squad wrapped up round one in fifth place overall.

Arcaya posted a one over, 73 on the day with the help of 11 pars and three birdies on the fourth, sixth and 17th holes. Sophomore Sam Choi trailed by just two strokes as he shot a 75 (+3) to land in a tie for 21st. Choi registered 13 pars in round one to tie for fourth overall in the category.

Following by one stroke was redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair who tied for 27th with a score of four over, 76. Sinclair finished round one tied for first in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.25 (-3) and he led the squad in birdies (5) to tie for second most overall.

Freshman Albert Boneta and senior Sam Dickey both shot a six over, 78 in the round to tie for 38th. Dickey, who is competing as an individual, carded 14 pars in the round to tie for the third most in the category.

Junior Galven Green finished the day tied for 56th as he shot nine over, 81 in the round.

As a team, the Lobos finished round one in fifth place with a score of 302 (+14). The squad is trailing fourth-place Texas A&M by just four strokes and third-place Arkansas State by five. SMU, which took first at the Maridoe Intercollegiate a season ago, leads the competition as it posted a one under, 287 on the day to finish five strokes ahead of second-place North Texas (292, +4).

Individually, SMU’s Noah Goodwin led the competition in round one with a score of 68 (-4), finishing two strokes ahead of second-place finishers SMU’s Mac Meissner and Arkansas State’s Julien Sale who tied for second at two under, 70.

Round two of the Maridoe Intercollegiate will tee off on Monday at 7:30 a.m. MT with a tee-time start on the first and 10th tee. The third and final round will take place on Tuesday.
