Lobos Roll Past Cameron for Second Straight Win

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Rolling off a 6-1 win over the Abilene Christian Wildcats in the first home match of the year, the UNM Women’s Tennis team swiftly defeated Division II Cameron University 5-0 at the Estes Tennis Center inside the indoor bubbles in Albuquerque. The Lobos now improve to 2-2 on the season, having won two in a row at home.
 
New Mexico created momentum in doubles as all three UNM teams quickly defeated the Aggies, winning 6-0 at both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, and then winning 6-1 at No. 2, giving UNM a 1-0 lead.
 
The singles match started a bit different as New Mexico and Cameron performed more neck to neck than previously viewed. The Lobos’ Yue Lin Chen was the first to gain a point as she swept Cameron’s Alisa Savina 6-0, 6-0. Chen now improves to 14-3 on the season.
 
The Lobos, now up 2-0, looked to Lauren Rich to give the team a considerable lead over the Aggies. Pilar Juarena of Cameron put up a fight in the No. 6 singles flight, but Rich handled her,  winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
 
Natasha Munday kept the winning trend, by allowing only Sara Petric only two game, both of which coming in the second set, 6-0, 6-2. The point from Munday put the Lobos up 4-0 and secured the win for the Lobos.
 
New Mexico’s Hsiang-Wen Huang was not far off from finishing her match versus Zhenia Shviadok after the Lobos secured the win, so the match continued. This match was closer than those before it, but Huang managed to pull ahead and win a fifth point 6-3, 6-4.
 
There were two matches that were left unfinished at the end of the day. Both Bronte Murgett and Ruth Copas held the advantage in their matches as both led 7-5, 5-2 and 7-5, 2-1 respectively.  Both matches were back and forth through their entirety. Murgett won her first set after a considerable comeback, as she was down 5-1 before pulling ahead for the 7-5 win. The matches were ended early and the Lobos finished the day with a 5-0 win over Cameron, although Murgett had match point upcoming when the match was halted.
 
The Lobos look to extend their win streak to three as they face UTSA tomorrow stating at noon in the Estes Tennis Center in Albuquerque.
 
NOTES:  Chen with her two wins is now a combined 28-7 in singles and doubles … Danielle Quevedo was held out of singles after her comeback win at No. 4 yesterday … Rich’s match was her first dual contest of the Spring … Sunday’s match against UTSA will be the fourth Texas team out of five so far this season for UNM.
