Murgett Wins Twice, Lobos Fall 5-2 at TCU

Box Score

FORT WORTH, Texas — Bronte Murgett won in singles and doubles, and UNM picked up the doubles point lead, but TCU won the final three singles matches for a 5-2 win, dropping UNM to 0-2 after a early season road test weekend, taking on a pair of Big 12 contenders.

Murgett had a solid day overall, earning a 6-4 doubles win at No. 3, teaming with Natasha Munday.  That win, over Addy Guevara and Mercedes Aristegui clinched the opening point for UNM.  The other doubles win was by the team of Hsiang-Wen Huang and Yue Lin Chen, who beat Stevie Kennedy and Chloe Hule 6-2.  UNM might have gotten a clean sweep as No. 1 doubles team Ruth Copas and Danielle Quevedo were up 4-3over Kate Paulus and Aleksa Cveticanan when the point was clinched.

Up 1-0 after doubles, TCU tied the match at 1-apiece with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 by Ellie Douglas over Copas.  TCU then went up 2-1 when Quevedo lost to Paulus 6-4, 6-1.  Murgett then evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 straight set win at No 3 singles over Kennedy.

That tied the match, but UNM was down in the other three matches, and TCU was able to capitalize.  Aristequi defeated Munday, who had won a pair of matches on Saturday, 6-4, 6-3.  The Horned Frogs clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Chen for a 4-2 lead.

At No. 2 singles, the last match left, Huang for UNM bounced back from dropping the first set 6-3 to bounce back and win the second set 6-2.  However, Cveticanin was able to take the third 6-1, making it a 5-2 final.

The Lobos, who lost 5-2 to Baylor on Saturday, now get to return home for three matches this weekend.  The Lobos host Abilene Christian at 1 p.m. on Friday, Cameron College at 9 a.m. on Saturday and UTSA at noon on Sunday.  There will also be a neutral site match each of those days as well.

NOTES:  The doubles point was the first won by UNM this season.
