Men’s Tennis Falls at Texas Tech 4-0
LUBBOCK, Texas — The Texas Tech Red Raiders, receiving votes in the latest ITA/Oracle National Poll, certainly looked the part, taking down the Lobos 4-0 on Sunday afternoon, handing New Mexico its first loss of the season.
The final result was a little misleading as New Mexico was leading in two of the three matches that were stopped in progress and were tied in the third. The Red Raiders improved to 3-0 on the season.
Texas Tech opened with the doubles point, taking doubles wins at No. 2 and No. 3, leaving the No. 1 match between Ricky Hernandez Tong/Stepan Holis and the No. 17 team of Bjorn Thomson/Parker Wynn tied at 6-6.
That sent the match to singles, where Tech took three wins at Nos. 1, 3 and 5 singles to clinch the match. First, UNM’s Karlo Divkovic lost 6-2, 6-1 to Wynn at No. 3 singles, and Nicolas Prieto fell right after that to No. 70 Thomson 6-4, 6-1.
The Lobos trailed 3-0, but looked to be in good shape in three of the other four matches. However, No. 23 Hernandez Tong couldn’t bounce back from a first set loss and fell 6-4, 6-2 to Tommy Mylnikov. At the time, Dominic West and Stepan Holis were both up a set and leading in the second set, and Facundo Bermejo was all square in his match when the clincher hit and the match was called.
The Lobos now have a week off before heading on the road to face Oregon on Super Bowl Sunday at 11 a.m.
