RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team completed round one of the 2019 Mountain West Championships on Monday. Sophomore Caroline Jansson leads the squad as she is tied for 15th overall just six strokes out of first place.

Jansson carded a five over, 77 in round one as she led the team in par-4 scoring with an average of 4.30 (+3). Coming in just one stroke behind and sitting in a tie for 17th was senior Darian Zachek who recorded a six over, 78 as her average of 3.00 (E) on par-3s tied for third across the competition. Both Jansson and Zachek registered two birdies in the round to lead the team and tie for third in the category.
Junior Reva Morris shot score of 81 (+9) in round one to finish tied for 27th. Morris shot an average of 3.25 (+1) on par-3s and her 12 pars on the day is just one short of the tournament leader (13). Senior Emma Edwards tied for first in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.74 (-1) as her score of 82 (+10) in the round tied her for 35th.
Freshman Tiana Cruz finished round one with a score of 11 over, 83 to put her in a tie for 37th.
As a team, the Lobos are in eighth place with a first-round total of 30 over, 318. The squad is tied for second in par-5 scoring with a 5.05 (+1) average and its 48 combined pars in the round is fourth in the competition, just eight shy of the tournament leader (56). New Mexico trails Boise State, Fresno State and Wyoming, all of which are tied for fifth, by five strokes and fourth-place UNLV by eight.
San José State leads the tournament after round one with a team score of 11 over, 299, followed by San Diego State in second and Nevada in third with scores of 303 (+15) and 305 (+17), respectively. The Spartans lead in both pars (56) and birdies (11), while UNLV was the only team to card an eagle on the day.
Round two of the Mountain West Championship is set to tee off on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. MT followed by the third and final round on Wednesday. Live stats for round two can be found HERE.
