Edwards Paces Lobos Through One Round in Napa

NAPA, Calif. — Senior Emma Edwards of The University of New Mexico women’s golf team leads the Lobos through round one of the Silverado Showdown co-hosted by Colorado and Oregon on Sunday. The senior is sitting in 24th, just four strokes out of first place and leads the Lobos for the second straight tournament.

ROUND ONE RESULTS

Edwards shot a two over, 74 in the round and is leading her team in both par-3 and par-5 scoring with averages of 2.75 (-1) and 4.75 (-1) in each category, respectively. Her par-3 average is tied for second across the competition and her 12 pars on the day put her tied for fourth overall in the round.

Coming in three strokes behind and tying for 58th was senior Darian Zachek who recorded a five over, 77 with the help of 11 pars and a birdie. Zachek and Edwards both shot an average of 4.40 (+4) on par-4s and they currently lead the Lobos in the category. Trailing by one stroke and tying for 66th was junior Reva Morris who posted a six over, 78 on the day.

Sophomore Caroline Jansson finished round one with a 79 (+8) to put her in a tie for 79th while freshman Kamie Hamada shot a 10 over, 81 to land tied for 87th.

As a team, New Mexico shot a 21 over, 309 to finish round one in 17th place. The squad carded 50 pars and six birdies on the day and is performing its best in par-3 scoring, averaging 3.15 (+3). The Lobos are four strokes behind 15th-place Washington State and Colorado State, each of which shot a 17 over, 305 in the round.

Mountain West competitor San José State leads the competition with a team score of one over, 289 as the Spartans notched 16 birdies and 54 pars in round one. Second place is held in a three-way tie as UCLA, USC and Northwestern each posted a score of three over, 291. USC is leading the competition in pars (58) and was the only school to register an eagle in the round.

Round two of the Silverado Showdown is set to tee off on Monday at 8:45 a.m. MT and will be followed by round three on Tuesday.
