Lobos Finish 10th at PING / ASU Invitational

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Senior Emma Edwards of The University of New Mexico women’s golf team recorded her top finish of the season on Sunday as she finished tied for 13th at the PING / ASU Invitational hosted by Arizona State. The team improved one spot on the leaderboard to finish 10th out of 14 squads as it registered its lowest score of the tournament in round three.

Edwards led the team in round three as she shot a one under, 71 to bring her three-round total to a 215 (-1). The senior came in third place in par-4 scoring throughout the competition with an average of 3.93 (-2) and she led the Lobos with 10 birdies, three in rounds one and two and four in round three. Edwards fell just one stroke away from a top-10 finish at the tournament, as the competitors tied for 10th shot a two under, 214.

Edwards previous top finish was a tie for 47th at the Branch Law Firm / Dick McGuire Invitational hosted at home on September 9 – 11, 2018.

Finishing second for the Lobos, tied for 43rd overall, was sophomore Caroline Jansson who recorded her lowest score of the competition in round three with a one over, 73 to bring her tournament total to a 223 (+7). Jansson led the team in both par-3 scoring and in pars recorded as her total of 36 put her in a tie for sixth overall in the competition.

Freshman Tiana Cruz competed as an individual for the Lobos and also carded her top finish of the season as she landed in 61st with a score of 228 (+12) in her three rounds of work. Cruz led New Mexico in par-5 scoring as she averaged 4.92 (-1) and she came in second on the team in birdies (7).  

Trailing by two strokes and finishing tied for 69th was junior Reva Morris who carded her best score of the tournament in round three with a two over, 74 to bring her three-round total to a 15 over, 231. Freshman Kamie Hamada also carded her best score in round three as her score of two over, 74 on the day brought her tournament total to a 232 (+16) to finish tied for 72nd.

Senior Darian Zachek finished in a tie for 76th across the competition with a score of 236 (+20).

As a team, the Lobos posted their lowest score of the tournament in round three as they shot a 294 (+6) after recording a 300 (+10) in both of the first two rounds. The squad finished up with a team score of 30 over, 894, trailing 9th-place Oregon State. UNM logged a total of 168 pars and 27 birdies over the weekend while coming in tied for sixth in pars across the competition.

It was USC that took first at the PING / ASU Invitational after improving two spots on the leaderboard. The team shot a three-round score of five under, 859 after shooting a team-low score of 9 under, 279 in round three. Host Arizona State trailed by just one stroke as it finished second with a score of four under, 260 while Washington and Northwestern finished tied for third with scores of an even 864. USC finished first in pars with 191 while fifth-place Stanford led in both birdies (46) and eagles (2). 

The Lobos will be back in action on Sunday, April 7 – Tuesday, April 9 as they head to Napa, Calif. for the Silverado Showdown co-hosted by Oregon and Colorado.
