Edwards Tied for Third After One Round in Arizona

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Senior Emma Edwards of The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished round one of the PING / ASU Invitational hosted by Arizona State tied for third out of 86 competitors on Friday. The Lobos are tied for 11th place after the round among the strong field of top-ranked competitors.

ROUND ONE RESULTS

Edwards recorded a two under, 70 on the day with the help of 14 pars and three birdies, leading UNM in both categories. The senior’s 14 pars tied her for second across the competition and her average of 3.70 (-3) in par-4 scoring put her first overall in the category. Edwards was one of just 14 competitors to record a score below par in the round and was one of just four to record a two under.

Junior Reva Morris came in five strokes behind Edwards as she shot a three over, 75 in the round to put her in a tie for 42nd. Morris notched two birdies and 11 pars in the round and is in third in par-4 scoring across the competition with an average of 3.90 (-1). Also recording 11 pars in the round and coming in one stroke behind Morris was freshman Tiana Cruz who is competing as an individual for the Lobos. Cruz is sitting tied for 51st with a score of 76 (+4).

Freshman Kamie Hamada shot a five over, 77 in the round and is in a tie for 63rd while sophomore Caroline Jansson is tied for 67th with a first-round score of six over, 78. Senior Darian Zachek followed by one stroke as her score of 79 (+7) put her in a tie for 72nd.

As a team, the Lobos finished the first day of the competition tied for 11th with Oklahoma State with a combined total of 12 over, 300. The squad posted a combined 61 pars in the round to put it second overall in the category and its average of 4.14 (+7) in par-4 scoring landed the Lobos in fourth in the category.

UNM trails 10th-place Denver by three strokes and ninth-place UCLA by four. Stanford is leading the tournament after round one with a team score of 287 (-1) and is followed by Arizona State which shot an even 288 to finish the day in second. Both Stanford and Arizona State led the competition with 16 birdies, while Stanford led the round in both par-3 and par-5 scoring. Third place is held by Oklahoma which shot a one over, 289.

Round two of the Ping / ASU Invitational will tee off on Saturday at 7:00 a.m. MT followed by the third and final round on Sunday.
