CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team tied for seventh out of 15 squads at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego on Tuesday. Freshman Sam Choi clinched a top-10 finish in the competition after five birdies in round three left him with the lowest individual round score posted by UNM throughout the tournament.

Choi recorded a one under, 71 in round three to bring his three-round total to an even 216, tying him for 10th overall. The freshman led the squad in both par-4 and par-5 scoring, averaging 4.03 (+1) and 4.67 (-4) in both categories, respectively. Choi also led the competition in birdies (10) and registered 35 pars in the competition.
Redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair came in second for the Lobos as he shot back-to-back scores of even 72 in his final two rounds of work after shooting a three over, 75 in round one. Sinclair came in second in the tournament in par-3 scoring as just one of two to post an average of 2.92 (-1) on par 3s. His 37 pars in the competition marked the third most overall and his combined total of 219 (+3) landed him in a tie for 20th.
Senior Sean Carlon came in second in the tournament in pars (38) and fell just one short of the tournament leader’s 39. Carlon finished the competition in a tie for 27th after carding a three-round total of four over, 220. Senior Augustin Holé came in four strokes behind as he finished the competition with an eight over, 224 to land him in a tie for 45th.
Holé’s second-round eagle marks the second tournament in a row that he has been the only Lobo to card an eagle in the competition. On February 21 – 23, the senior was one of just six competitors to record two eagles at the John Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawaii.
Sophomore Galven Green trailed Holé by just one stroke after posting his lowest score in round three and taking off a stroke in each round of work. Green finished the competition in a tie for 50th with a score of nine over, 225. Coming in four strokes behind was freshman Roy Choi who’s score of 229 (+13) put him in a tie for 70th.
As a team, the Lobos posted a third-round score of 291 (+3) to bring their combined total to a 14 over, 878 and put them in a tie for seventh with Ole Miss. UNM led the competition in pars with 172, and came in third in par-3 scoring, averaging 3.23 (+14). The squad beat out Mountain West opponents Colorado State, which shot 23 over 887 and finished 11th, and Air Force which finished 14th with a score of 47 over, 911.

San Diego State, which was the last of the Mountain West opponents competing, finished fifth with a score of eight over, 872.
Arizona State took first place in the competition, shooting 10 under, 854 and registering a tournament-high four eagles. Texas trailed by just one stroke, shooting an 855 (-9) and was followed by St. Mary’s which finished third with a score of four under, 860.
The Lobos will be back in action in one week as they head to Tucson, Arizona to compete at the National Invitational hosted by Arizona on March 18 – 19, 2019.
