CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is sitting in eighth place out of 15 teams after two rounds at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic co-hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego. Freshman Sam Choi is tied for 14th overall after jumping up six spots on the leaderboard between round one and round two.
Choi recorded 26 pars and five birdies throughout the first two rounds of action to aid in a low first-round score of an even 72, followed by a second-round score of 73 (+1). The freshman’s 26 pars marks the second most in the competition thus far and is just two behind the tournament leader’s 28. Choi registered a two-round score of just one over, 145 to put him in a tie for 14th, just one stroke away from 10th-place and two away from fifth.
Senior Sean Carlon and redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair trailed by just two strokes, tied for 26th, as they both recorded a combined total of three over, 147 on the day. Sinclair, who leads the squad in par-3 scoring with an average of 2.88 (-1), chopped three strokes off of his round-one total of 75 (+3) as he shot an even 72 in round two.
Senior Augustin Holé improved 19 spots on the leaderboard between the two rounds to land in a tie for 39th as his second-round score of one over, 73 was a three-stroke improvement of his first-round score of four over, 76. Holé was the only Lobo to register an eagle on the day and he led the squad in par-4 scoring with an average of 4.10 (+2).
Coming in one stroke behind and finishing the day in a tie for 46th was sophomore Galven Green who shot a combined score of six over, 150 with six birdies and 18 pars. Freshman Roy Choi, who is competing as an individual for the Lobos, jumped up nine spots on the leaderboard to end the day tied for 70th. He improved his first-round score of 80 (+8) to a 74 (+2) in round two to bring his combined total to a ten over, 154.
As a team, the Lobos finished the day in eighth after taking three strokes off of their score between round one and round two. The squad carded a first-round score of 295 (+7) followed by a 292 (+4) in round two to bring its combined total to an 11 over, 587. The Lobos trail seventh-place Arizona by just one stroke and sixth-place Ole Miss by two.
UNM is ahead of two of the three Mountain West teams competing at the tournament, Colorado State by eight strokes and Air Force by 21 strokes.
Leading the after round two is Arizona State which shot a 15 under, 561 in the first two rounds and is 10 strokes ahead of second-place Texas which is sitting five under, 571. North Carolina holds third as it shot a one under, 575 on the day.
