Lobos Finish 13th at Arizona Wildcat Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished 13th at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona after recording its lowest score of the competition in round three. Junior Reva Morris carded her lowest score of the competition in round three as she clinched 15th overall to mark her top finish of the season.

Morris was one of just 11 competitors to register an eagle in the tournament which came in round three as she recorded a score of 71 (-1) to bring her three-round total to an eight over, 224. She led the Lobos in both par-5 scoring, averaging 4.83 (-2), and par-4 scoring with an average of 4.28 (+8). Morris also led the team in pars (32) and improved 16 spots on the leaderboard to finish just nine strokes away from first place.

The junior’s 15th-place finish marks her new top finish of the season. Her previous top finish was a tie for 19th at the Branch Law Firm / Dick McGuire Invitational on September 10 – 11, 2018 hosted at home.

Coming in second for UNM at the tournament was sophomore Caroline Jansson who landed in a tie for 51st with a combined total of 18 over, 234. Jansson led the squad in par-3 scoring as she averaged 3.08 (+1) while registering nine birdies and 24 pars. Coming in just one stroke behind and also carding nine birdies was senior Darian Zachek who shot a 235 (+19) in the competition.

Zachek improved her score in each round of play, chopping off seven strokes overall between round one and round three. She advanced 13 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 55th.

Freshman Kamie Hamada recorded an 80 (+8) in round three of the competition to bring her tournament total to a 239 (+23), placing her in 70th. Hamada registered eight birdies in the competition, three in both rounds one and three along with two in round two. Senior Emma Edwards followed by just one stroke as she finished the competition tied for 71st with score of 240 (+24).

UNM shot its lowest score of the competition in round three with a 305 (+17) to bring its combined total to a 65 over, 929. The squad finished up the competition in 13th place to beat out Mountain West opponent Fresno State which recorded a 67 over, 931 to finish 14th.

Arizona State finished out the competition in first with a seven-stroke advantage over second-place Oregon. The Sun Devils shot a 22 over, 886 and led the tournament in both birdies (41) and eagles (3) while Oregon shot a 29 over, 893. Coming in just one stroke behind and taking third in the tournament was host Arizona which recorded an 894 (+30).

The Lobos will be back in action on March 29 – 31, 2019 as they head back to Arizona for the Ping / ASU Invitational hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
