Women’s Golf Heads to Bruin Wave Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is back in action this week as they head to the 10th annual Bruin Wave Invitational hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine on February 25-26. The Lobos will compete against a strong field as they take on the par-72, 6,323-yard course at the San Luis Obispo Country Club in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

There will be 15 squads competing at the tournament including hosts Pepperdine and UCLA, Arizona State, California, Cal Poly, New Mexico, in-state rival New Mexico State, Northwestern, Ole Miss, Oregon, Mountain West-opponent San Diego State, San Francisco, Stanford, UC Irvine and Washington. UNM will be making its eighth appearance at the tournament.

San Diego State, the only other MW squad competing, is sitting in fifth overall in the conference with an average score of 295.17 over 12 rounds. The Lobos trail by three spots on the leaderboard and are averaging 301.08 strokes over 12 rounds of work.

Senior Darian Zachek leads for UNM in the conference as she is tied for 23rd overall with an average of 3.07 vs par. Junior Reva Morris follows in 34th place in the MW with a 4.60 average vs. par.

Of the Pac-12 teams competing, UCLA holds the second-place spot in its conference with a 288.03 scoring average over 32 rounds, while Stanford is in third, averaging 289.33 strokes over 30 rounds. Arizona State sits in fifth in the league, averaging 291.57 in 30 rounds, while Washington and Oregon hold the sixth and seventh-place spots, respectively. 

The last tournament the Lobos competed in was held just one week ago. The Lobos finished tied for eighth out of 16 squads at the Rebel Beach Invitational hosted by UNLV and Long Beach State. Zachek led the squad in the competition, shooting an 11 over, 227 and finishing tied for 23rd. Sophomore Caroline Jansson followed by just two strokes, posting a score of 229 (+13) and landing tied for 28th overall.

Round one of the Bruin Wave Invitational will tee off on Monday, Feb. 25 at 9:00 a.m. with a shotgun start and will be directly followed by round two. The third round of action is set to begin on Tuesday at 8:50 a.m.
