Lobos Break Two Records on Third Day of MW Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — After the third day of competition in which two Lobos broke school records and another gained one more gold by the end of the day, The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team held onto fourth place with a score of 537 at the Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships. 

The Lobos had six top-10 finishes on the day with three top-three finishes.

Senior Konoha Shinada earned a place on the podium with a runner-up finish in the 100-yard butterfly while breaking her own school record. Shinada finished with a final time of 53.37, which qualified as a NCAA “B” standard. Alongside Shinada, freshman Hedda Øristland placed seventh in the 100-yard butterfly after touching the wall at 54.35.

Sophomore Matea Sumajstorcic also produced a runner-up finish, completing the 400-yard IM in 4:16.01. Sumajstorcic broke her own record by two seconds which propelled her to post a NCAA “B” standard result.

Senior Adriana Palomino won her second event of the 2019 MW Championships on Friday, this time in the 200-yard freestyle. She swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.03 to take the event win. Sophomore Klara Farkas competed in the 200-yard freestyle alongside Palomino, placing fourth with a final time of 1:48.14 and dropping almost a full second off her personal best.

The final set of Lobos to place in the top 10 was the 200-yard freestyle relay team comprised of Shinada, Palomino, senior Carol De Groote Tarvares and Øristland that placed fifth with a final time of 1:32.36.

The Lobos will return to the pool on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT/10 a.m. MT for the completion of the 2019 MW Championships.
