MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team moved into fourth place with a score of 316 at the end of the second day of competition of the Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships. During Thursday’s portion of the meet, the Lobos set another school record and came out with their first win during the competition.
Senior Adriana Palomino claimed the Lobos first win during the 2019 MW Championships and in the process set a season best as she touched the wall at 4:43.63 to first the 500-yard freestyle. It was Palomino’s fifth win of the season in the event and qualified as a NCAA “B” Standard time.
Senior captain Emily Huffer broke former Lobo Caitlin Gardiner’s record in the 200-yard backstroke set in 2014 by 0.05 seconds. Huffer finished the preliminary time trial with a final time of 1:58.33 to set not only a personal best but the school record.
Another Lobo that finished the day within the top 10 was sophomore Klara Farkas, who finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle with a final time of 4:49.19.
The Lobos will return to the pool on Friday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. CT/10 a.m. MT, starting off with five preliminary events on the third day of the 2019 MW Championships.
