MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. —– The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team broke two school records to finish the first day of competition at the 2019 Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships. The Lobos came out of Wednesday’s competition in fifth place, just 12.5 points behind Boise State in third, with a score of 139.50.
Seniors Adriana Palomino and Emily Huffer along with sophomores Matea Sumajstorcic and Klara Farkas set a new school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay while earning a second-place finish with a final time of 7:12.04. The team beat the record that the same four swimmers set on the first day of the MW Championships last year by 0.39 seconds for the runner-up finish.
During the relay, another record was set as Palomino swam the first leg in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 1:46.93 for the fastest time recorded in program history in the 200-yard freestyle.
The team comprised of senior Konoha Shinada, junior Breanna Wiercinski, along with freshmen Katie Pollock and Hedda Øristland placed sixth in the 200-yard medley relay with a final time of 1:40.43.
In diving, junior Natasha Dark placed eighth in the A-Final of the 1-m dive event after finishing with a final score of 273.80. The junior qualified for the final with a 270.70 in the preliminary round, while freshman Jocelyn Gallais just missed the A-final after finishing ninth in the prelims with a score of 261.55.
The Lobos will return to the pool on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. CT/10 a.m. MT for the second day of the 2019 MW Championships.
