Lobos Tie for Eighth at Rebel Beach Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team wrapped up play at the Rebel Beach Invitational hosted by UNLV and Long Beach State on Tuesday in a tie for eighth-place out of 18 squads. Both senior Emma Edwards and sophomore Caroline Jansson posted a 2.92 average on par-3s, landing them tied for second overall in par-3 scoring.

Jansson posted a third-round score of 73 (+1) which was the lowest score posted by UNM throughout the tournament. She was able to chop a total of six strokes off of her score between round one and round three and her final score of 13 over, 229, landed her in a tie for 28th overall. Senior Darian Zachek also improved her score in the third round as she carded a three over, 75 after posting a 76 (+4) in both of the first two rounds. Zachek finished tied for 23rd with a three-round total of 227 (+11).

Both Jansson and Zachek registered five birdies in the tournament, while Zachek’s 37 pars fell just four short of the tournament leader (41).

Freshman Kamie Hamada came in third for New Mexico with the help of a strong second-round score of 75 (+3). She finished in a tie for 50th with a total of 234 (+18) after recording 31 pars and four birdies. Junior Reva Morris trailed by just one stroke, posting a 19-over, 235 and landing in a tie for 56th. Morris’ 35 pars on the tournament marked the second most on the squad.

Edwards came in fifth for the Lobos as she recorded a total of 242 (+26), finishing tied for 70th overall.

As a team, UNM finished with a score of 922 (+58) in the tournament, tying for eighth with BYU and Nevada. The Lobos’ scores did not see much variation in the contest as they recorded a 308 (+20) in round one, followed by a score of 307 (+19) in rounds two and three. New Mexico beat out Mountain West opponent Colorado State which shot a 937 (+73) and landed in 14th place, as well as in-state rival New Mexico State which finished 15th with a total of 79 over, 943.

It was Arizona that took home first at the tournament with a winning score of 14 over, 878. Host UNLV followed by four strokes, carding an 882 (+18) and landing in second, while a 10-stroke gap separated third-place Virginia which shot 28 over, 892 in the tournament.

The Lobos will be back in action on Monday, February 25 through Tuesday, February 26 as they head to San Luis Obispo, Calif. for the Bruin Wave Invitational hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine.
