DENVER, Colo. — The University of New Mexico Women’s Tennis team continued their stretch of games in Colorado, facing Denver.  It did not go the way of the Lobos, as UNM lost 4-0 to the Pioneers, UNM’s second loss in a row  after a three-game winning streak.

Denver quickly gained momentum in doubles as the Pioneer team of Tatum Burger and Anna Riedmiller posted a 6-0 sweep over New Mexico sophomores Hsiang-Wen Huang and Yue Lin Chen.

Eyes then turned to doubles team of sophomore Danielle Quevedo and senior Ruth Copas to try and even out the Denver advantage. Despite a hard fight, Quevodo and Copas were defeated by Denver’s Camille Verden-Anderson and Bianca Mok 6-2.  Despite the losses, the Lobos still hold a 40-18 record in doubles matchups.

Now on her own, Huang started the singles competition off strong, and although falling short in the first set, pushed the set to 6-4. The second set was then dominated by Denver’s Anna Riedmiler as she posted a 6-0 advantage over Huang. This win gave the Pioneers another point and a 2-0 lead.

It was a different start for Copas as she faced Denver’s nationally-ranked Bianca Mok, losing 6-0 in the first set. Copas was stronger in the second set, but fell short, giving Denver a 3-0 advantage over the Lobos after a 6-2 loss.

The last match that was finished on the day was between Verden-Anderson and Chen. Chen, UNM’s leader in singles wins, couldn’t come through and keep the match going, falling 6-3, 6-1. The only other match going was at No. 2 singles, where Bronte Murgett was up 6-4, 2-3.  Danielle Quevedo and Natasha Munday never got their matches off the ground.

UNM head to the Beehive state next week to face Utah on February 8 and BYU on February 9.

NOTES:  The match marked the first shutout of the Lobos this season … Murgett and Huang flip-flopped in the order.
