Lobos Gain Seventh Straight Win Against NMSU

Behind victories in 11 out of 16 events and 29 finishes in the top three on the day, UNM defeated rival NMSU 176.5-123.5 on Saturday to extend its win streak in the rivalry to seven as well as its season win streak to three-straight meets and four-straight opponents.

The Lobos swept the relay events with senior Konoha Shinada contributing to both events. 

Shinada, junior Breanna Wiercinski along with freshmen Katie Pollock and Hedda Øritsland started off the day with their third-straight win in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:45.76.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Shinada, senior Adriana Palomino along with sophomores Matea Sumajstorcic and Klara Farkas claimed the victory, finishing the relay with a time of 3:31.83 to also earn their third-straight win in the 400-free relay.

Aiding the Lobos in their 53-point victory over the Aggies were the five events in which the Lobos finished in first- and second-place in the dual, including two wins by Oristland  and Palomino and two runner-up finishes by Sumajstorcic.

Farkas placed first (1:54.93) and Sumajstoricic placed second (1:55.56) in the 200-yard freestyle, while in the 100-yard backstroke, Oristland finished in first at 57.33 and Carol De Groote Tavares placed second with a final time of 58.51. In the 100-yard freestyle, Oristland placed first (51.73) followed by Palomino in second (53.17). Palomino took another win on the day in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.05) along with Sumajstorcic who placed second (5:08.65). Lastly, in the 100-yard butterfly, Farkas placed first with a final time of 56.74 and Shinada in second with a time of 57.15.

In addition, the Lobos captured all three podium spots in the 1000-yard freestyle and in the 200-yard backstroke. In the 1000-yard freestyle, Palomino took the win touching the wall at 10:17.55, followed by freshman Bryndis Bolladottir (10:30.18) and freshman Jordan Hartley (10:57.38) in third. In the 200-yard backstroke, senior De Groote Tavares came in first with a final time of 2:05.75, freshman Mari Aoki took second (2:09.21) and senior Emily Huffer placed third (2:12.42).

Shinada tallied an individual win in the 50-yard freestyle with a final time of 24.24 and Wiercinski placed third after completing the event in 24.72.  In the 200-yard IM, Oristland finished in second (2:08.30) and De Groote Tavares placed third (2:11.61).

Junior Asami Terada placed third in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 1:06.85 and 2:26.29, respectively. Also, freshman Priscila De la Pena placed third in the 200-yard butterfly with a final time of 2:08.87.

In the three-meter dive, Natasha Dark and Allyson Concepcion had back-to-back results with second- and third-place finishes after a final score of 268.20 and 265.57, respectively. Meanwhile, freshman Jocelyn Gallais and Concepcion also had back-to-back finishes in the one-meter dive with a final score of 257.03 and 256.28, respectively, to place second and third.

The Lobos will be back at home for their next meet on Feb. 2 at noon against Mountain West school Nevada, which will serve as Senior Day.
