Iconic 2018 Hall of Honor Class Named

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The 2018 University of New Mexico Hall of Honor class certainly has a championship feel.  Leading the way are the 2017 NCAA National Champion Women’s Cross Country Team and joining them as inductees are Pete Gibson (Basketball), Willie Long (Basketball), DonTrell Moore (Football), Jeff Rowland (Soccer) and Sam Scarber (Football).
 
In addition, UNM will honor its 2017-18 Coach of the Year Joe Franklin (Men’s & Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field), Male Athlete of the Year Josh Kerr (Cross Country/Track & Field), and Female Athletes of the Year Cherise Beynon (Basketball) and Ednah Kurgat (Cross Country/Track & Field).
 
The honorees will be inducted officially at the Hall of Honor awards dinner, which will be held on Thursday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the Marriott Pyramid North. Tickets are $60 each or $600 for a table of 10. Call the UNM Alumni Lettermen’s Association at 925-5905 to purchase tickets.  The group will also be honored during New Mexico’s football game with Fresno State on October 20.
 
Below are biographical sketches on UNM’s five inductees in the Hall of Honor for 2018.
  
Pete Gibson (Basketball 1968-1971)

Jeff Rowland  (Soccer 2002-2005)

Sam Scarber (Football 1968-1971)

  • Drafted by Dallas Cowboys in 1971 NFL Draft
  • Played nine years professionally (NFL, CFL, WFL)
  • Fitness center owner in Hollywood, Calif.
  • An accomplished character actor with nearly 100 movie and television credits

DonTrell Moore  (Football 2001-2005)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology 2005
  • Held Mountain West Conference career rushing leader record until 2017 with 4,973 yards
  • UNM career rushing leader
  • UNM freshman rushing record holder with 1,117 yards
  • 51 rushing touchdowns and 59 total touchdowns are the most in UNM history and first in conference history until 2017
  • Surpassed 1,000 yards rushing in the 9th week of the 2005 season to become just the sixth player in history of NCAA DIA football to reach the 1,000 yard mark four times in a career
  • 1,028 career rushing attempts are the most in school and Mountain West history
  • 26 career 100-yard rushing games (UNM record)
  • Averaged 103.6 yards in 48 career games
  • Broke the UNM single season rushing record in 2003
  • UNM record for most rushing touchdowns in a season 2005
  • 2002 Mountain West Freshman of the Year
  • 2003-2004 Pre-season Honorable Mention All-America
  • 2005 Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year
  • First player in UNM and Mountain West History to be named First Team All-Conference four times
