Ahlise Hurst makes it three-straight MW Player of the Week awards
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball has claimed the Mountain West Player of the Week award for the third-straight week as the league announced freshman guard Ahlise Hurst as the latest honoree on Monday.
OFFICIAL MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK RELEASE
Hurst is the third in a line of Lobos earning the weekly honor this season. Jaisa Nunn was first to be named conference player of the week on November 19. Aisia Robertson followed that up with the award last week on November 26.
This is the second time in as many years that the UNM women’s basketball team has had a player be named player of the week three-consecutive weeks as they did so last year, claiming the first three awards for 2017-18.
Hurst’s selection for the award comes in response to a breakout week offensively for the Australian native. For the week, Hurst averaged 25.0 points per game and shot 53% overall from the floor (18-of-34). Most of her damage came from beyond the arc as she shot 46% from range, knocking down 12-of-26.
Her best game of the week came against Oklahoma. In that game, Hurst shot past all her previous season bests as she ended the game with 39 points on 14-of-24 shooting that included 9-of-17 from three-point range.
The 39 points for Hurst against the Sooners set new records both at UNM and in the Mountain West for most points scored in a game by a freshman. The previous scoring record at both UNM and the Mountain West was 35 points.
Prior to that Oklahoma game, Hurst was averaging 5.8 points per game and had made just six three-pointers in four games.
Hurst followed up that stellar Oklahoma game with another double-figure scoring effort as she had 11 points in UNM’s 83-58 win over in-state rival New Mexico State.
Hurst and the Lobos will now prepare for a game against UTEP on Wednesday, December 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.
