ALBUQERQUE, N.M.— The University of New Mexico volleyball team has received a National Letter of Intent from Yamelis Mojica for the signing class of 2019, as announced by head coach Jeff Nelson on Thursday.
Standing at 6’2”, Mojica is a versatile athlete who can play either at the outside hitter or middle blocker position, providing another option to compliment the Lobos.
“This is another great get for our program,” said Nelson. “Yamelis is a strong player with a good jump and a big arm. She can play multiple positions and has international experience with Puerto Rico’s junior national team. It’s a perfect fit with our other signees and the needs of our team.”
From Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Mojica was a member of the Puerto Rico National Team that competed in the NORCECA U18 in Cuba and again in Costa Rica and Mexico with the U20 team.
During her high school career at Colegio Adianez, Mojica was honored as the Puerto Rico High School Championship MVP and was a two-time high school all-star selection by Onda Deportiva. Among her other accolades include being selected as the Copa Angel Matos MVP and an all-star, the Jeep Volleyball Challenge MVP and all-star as well as the Spring Volleyball Challenge MVP and all-star.
“I chose The University of New Mexico for its excellent academic and volleyball program,” said the newest Lobo. “Besides it being a tranquil place, it’s positioned in an excellent place in the United States and it felt like home when I visited, leading me to believe that it’ll be a wonderful place for me to grow as a person and a player.”
She intends to major in exercise science with an emphasis on pre-physical therapy at UNM.
Mojica joins the 2019 signing class which signed three in November.
