BOSTON— A year after Ednah Kurgat set the UNM and Mountain West records in the 5,000-meter run at the BU Season Opener in Boston, the junior set a new mark on Saturday, and in the process made more history as she registered the third-fastest time in NCAA history.
Kurgat was the first to cross the line at 15:14.78, 4.25 seconds faster than her time in this meet in 2017, joined next by fellow Lobo Weini Kelati at 15:15.24, who improved her time from last year by 21.79 seconds for a personal best and a runner-up finish.
Kurgat and Kelati were two of four runners that finished under the 15:17 mark and eight that finished under 15:30 at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.
As aforementioned, Kurgat recorded the third-best time all-time in NCAA history with Kelati running the fifth-fastest time in NCAA history. Kurgat missed out on second all-time by just 0.60 seconds and the fastest time ever recorded by 2.56 seconds.
