HOUSTON, Texas— After two days of competition and 14 events, The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team is sitting in fourth place with 589 points, just half a point behind third-place Tulane. The Lobos had two top-three performances on the day and one school record broken.
Sophomore Matea Sumajstorcic kicked off the individual competitions Saturday with the 400-yard IM. She broke her previous UNM record (4:19.33) with a time of 4:18.06 to place her fifth.
The 800-freestyle relay team, comprised of seniors Emily Huffer and Adriana Palomino along with sophomores Sumajstorcic and Klara Farkas, touched the wall in 7:16.99 to place second.
Palomino also notched a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.44, coming in 1.56 seconds behind the top finisher from Houston.
The Lobos also had four fifth-place finishes including in the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard IM, 100-yard freestyle and in the three-meter dive event.
Senior Konoha Shinada, sophomore Breanna Wiercinski along with freshmen Katie Pollock and Hedda Øritsland swam the 200-medley relay finishing with a time of 1:42.00 placing fifth.
Øritsland also placed fifth individually in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.86.
The diving team posted fifth- and sixth-place finishes in the three-meter dive event. Freshman Jocelyn Gallais placed fifth with 262.60 points and senior Allyson Concepcion followed in sixth with 259 points.
The Lobos will return to the pool on Saturday at 9 a.m. MT/10 a.m. CT to compete in day three of the Phill Hansel Invitational.
