Lobos in Third After First Day of Competition

HOUSTON, Texas— The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team finished the first day of competition at the Phill Hansel Invitational on Friday in third place with 281 points. The Lobos were led by senior Adriana Palomino, who placed second in the 500-yard freestyle.

UNM had three top-three finishes and a total of seven top-five finishes throughout six events on the day. Palomino took the top spot for the Lobos, finishing second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:43.77. Sophomore Klara Farkas came in just after Palomino, placing third in 4:48.19.

The final Lobo to place in the top three was junior Natasha Dark who took third in the one-meter dive event after posting a score of 264.60. Dark led a trio of Lobos that finished back-to-back-to-back with third-, fourth- and fifth-place spots. Freshman Jocelyn Gallais placed fourth with a 260.35 and senior Allyson Conception finished fifth with a 254.10.

In the 200-freestyle relay, the squad consisting of senior Konoha Shinada, junior Breanna Wiercinski, along with freshmen Hedda Øritsland and Katie Pollack touched the wall in 1:33.08 to place fifth.
A pair of Lobos finished fifth and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle including Øritsland, who took fifth (23.24) but was just 0.62 seconds behind the first-place finisher from Northern Colorado. Just behind Øritsland was Shinada who was sixth with a time of 23.30.

Another notable performance on day one from the Lobos came from sophomore Matea Sumajstorcic who claimed a sixth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with her time of 4:51.44.

The University of Houston currently leads the team standings with 490 points, but UNM sits just nine points behind Tulane.  

The Lobos will return to the pool on Saturday at 9 a.m. MT/10 a.m. CT to compete in day two of the Phill Hansel Invitational.
