HOUSTON, Texas— The University of New Mexico women”s swimming and diving team will be competing Friday, Nov. 16 through Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Phill Hansel Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston.

The Lobos will be competing at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center against 11 other teams, including the Nevada Wolf Pack. UNM competed against the Wolf Pack in the Pacific Invitational to open the season, where the Wolf Pack placed first and the Lobos placed third.

UNM looks to improve its results in this meet, as the Cherry and Silver also competed in the Phill Hansel Invitational last year, ultimately finishing with 500 points for ninth. Then-junior Adriana Palomino provided some highlights in the meet as she produced an individual win in the 1650-yard freestyle with a final time of 16:23.75 after tying her own school record in the event with her seed time, posting a 16:22.46. On the opening day of the meet, Palomino broke her own school record for the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.77 en route to the event win.

Then-junior Konoha Shinada also set a school record with a time of 53.45 in the 100-yard butterfly, which she then matched in the A-Finals to win the event.

This weekend’s meet marks the second time the diving team will be competing in the one-meter and three-meter this season, however, this is the first time that they will be competing on the platform. In the last meet, against NAU, the diving team had two top-five finishes in the one-meter and three-meter dive. Jocelyn Gallais placed third in the three-meter dive, scoring a 278.98, and Natasha Dark placed fourth, scoring a 276.75. The Lobos took two places in the one-meter dive as well as Gallais placed fourth (265.50) and Dark placed fifth (259.43).

Freshman Hedda Øritsland is currently leading the team in first place finishes to date with five wins, four of which are consecutive. In the home meet three weeks ago, Øritsland produced individual wins in the 50-yard free, the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, while also winning the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly at the Pacific Invitational. This weekend, she will be competing in four individual events (200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard butterfly). Palomino placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, and the 500-yard freestyle in the home meet against NAU, and sophomore Matea Sumajstorcic, placed in the top three at the last two meets in the seven events she competed in.

As a team, the Lobos are coming off of a win over the NAU Lumberjacks, 186-114, in which they won 12 events and earned 28 top-three finishes during the meet..
