Women’s Golf Heads to Mexico to Wrap Up Fall Season

SAN JOSE, Mexico — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is set to wrap up its fall season as the squad heads to San Jose, Mexico to compete in the Battle at the Beach hosted by Baylor this Friday, Nov. 2 through Sunday, Nov. 4. The tournament will take place at the 6,202-yard, par-71 Club Campestre San Jose golf course located right on the coast of San Jose.

UNM will be one of 17 squads competing at the three-day tournament. The rest of the field includes  Auburn, Baylor, Clemson, Denver, Houston, Iowa, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, TCU, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, Vanderbilt and Virginia. The teams will take part in a practice round on Thursday before kicking off the action on Friday.

There will be five competitors representing the Lobos at the Battle at the Beach including senior Darian Zachek, senior Emma Edwards, junior Reva Morris, sophomore Caroline Jansson and freshman Kamie Hamada. The team enters the tournament following a 12th-place finish at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invite hosted by the University of Texas on October 19-21. Zachek led New Mexico in the tournament as she shot a three-round total of 230 (+14) and landed herself in a tie for 42nd. 

Edwards trailed Zachek by just five strokes at the tournament as she posted a 19 over, 235 on the tournament. A trio of Lobos (Zachek, Morris and Hamada) each recorded four birdies while Zachek lead the team in pars with a total of 35, just five shy of the tournament leader (40).

Of the 17 schools competing in the weekend’s action, Texas, Tulane and Baylor also appeared at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invite. Texas and Baylor both finished top-three in the tournament with Texas outshooting the second-place finisher by seven strokes for the win. Tulane finished just one place ahead of the Lobos as they landed in 11th overall. 

The Battle at the Beach will tee off on Friday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start followed by round two on Saturday and round three on Sunday.
