Twelve More Wins on Day Two of Halloween Classic
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Day two of the UNM Halloween Classic was more of the same for the Lobos, as the team went 3-3 in doubles against New Mexico State and Colorado State and 9-3 in singled against Iowa State and Illinois State. UNM closed out its portion of the tournament with a 7-4 mark in doubles and 17-7 in singles.
The tournament finishes tomorrow with four doubles matches featuring New Mexico State, Colorado State, Iowa State and Illinois State.
UNM opened the day with three straight wins against NMSU in doubles. Ruth Copas and Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang defeated Lindsay Harlas and Harsha Challa with a 6-3 win. Following that Bronte Murgett and Danielle Quevedo went up against Neus Torregrosa and Gavi Kalaga taking home a 6-1 win. Battling in the last set of doubles was Natasha Munday and Yue Lin “Polly” Chen who went up against Yadira Rubio and Clara Rizea finishing with a 7-6 win.
The Lobos were not as successful against Colorado State, dropping all three doubles matches. Ruth Copas and Bronte Murgett went head on with Stella Cliffe and Alyssa Grijalva, falling 6-4. Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang and Lauren Rich lost to Emily Luetschwager and Priscilla Palermo 6-2 and Natasha Munday and Maddie Chavez lost 6-1.
Later that afternoon UNM switched gears to singles, going 4-2 against Iowa State. Copas had a strong match up against Ekaterina Grib winning 6-4, 7-5. Next up was another strong performance from Murgett against Annabella Bonadonna, ending in a 6-1, 6-2 win. UNM’s other two wins against Iowa State were by Quevedo taking down Regina Espindola 6-1, 6-1 and Chen defeating Caroline Gibbins 6-1, 6-0. Dropping matches were Haung against Maty Cancini in a tight match 7-6, 6-4, and Lauren Rich, who lost to Karen Alvarez 6-3, 6-3.
In the next round of singles, UNM took on Illinois State winning all five matches played. Copas defeated Tara Damnjanovic, coming back from a set down and winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. In her third win of the day, Murgett took down Natalia Bravo with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Quevedo defeated Laura Fitzgerald 6-1, 6-2 and Chen won 6-1, 6-3 over Jana Kutskoka. UNM’s other win was by Munday, winning a three-setter over Estelle Vanthier 7-6, 1-6, 6-2. UNM’s only other singles match was by Maddie Chavez, who faced Colorado State’s Emily Kolbow, losing 6-4, 6-3.
