AUSTIN, Texas — Senior Darian Zachek led The University of New Mexico women’s golf team after one round of play at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invite hosted by the University of Texas on Friday. The Lobos ended the day in a tie for 11th out of 13 squads after round one of play at the par-72 course.
Zachek recorded a round-one score of three over, 75 and posted four birdies in the round, just two shy of the tournament leader (6). She is currently sitting in a tie for 20th with the first place leader just seven strokes ahead at four under, 68. Coming in five strokes behind for New Mexico was junior Reva Morris who shot an 80 (+8) in the round and recorded one birdie and five pars on the day.
Freshman Kamie Hamada and senior Emma Edwards wrapped up the day with an even score of 81 (+9) after both recording nine pars in the first round. Sophomore Caroline Jansson trailed by just three strokes as she shot a 12 over, 84.
As a team, the Lobos recorded a first-round score of 317 (+29), tying them for 11th with opponent Texas State. The squad is sitting just six strokes behind 10th-place Colorado which shot 23 over, 311 and they lead 13th-place North Texas by one stroke.
Finishing the round in first place was tournament-host University of Texas which shot three over, 291 and is leading second-place Kent State by three strokes (294). Just one stroke behind is Florida which shot a seven over, 295 in the round.
Round two is set to kick off on Saturday, October 20 with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m. followed by the third and final round on Sunday.
