STOCKTON, Calif. — The University of New Mexico Lobos finished third at the Pacific Invitational in its first meet of the season. They scored 726 points over the course of the two-day meet.
On the weekend, the Lobos had 18 top-three finishes between the 17 events, including nine in Saturday’s events, and four of which were first-place finishes with Hedda Øristland, Matea Sumajstorcic, and Klara Farkas winning their events.
A day after winning the 50-yard freestyle, Øristland gave the Lobos a win in the 100-yard butterfly (55.54). Sumajstorcic finished the meet with a victory in the 1650-yard freestyle, dominating the event with a time of 17:16.67 and finishing over 17 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. Farkas won the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:58.38 and over a full second ahead of the next finisher, while Sumajstorcic placed third in the event at 5:02.87.
The relay teams were successful on day two as UNM placed at least one relay team in the top-three of the two relays that took place. Carol De Groote Tavares, Asami Terada, Konoha Shinada, and Øritsland took third in the 400- yard medley relay (3:55.90) to start off the day. The 200-yard free relay team of Shinada, Øristland, Brooke Zukowski and Breanna Wiercinski also finished third with a time of 1:37.16.
De Groote Tavares took second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.45). Øritsland finished with a 52.57 in the 100-yard freestyle, also taking second. Shinada placed third in the 100- yard butterfly with a time of 56.87.
UNM had several swimmers who had good showings that fell just outside of the top-three in their respective events. Shinada fell 0.26 seconds short of a top-three finishing with a time of 24.17 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. Priscila De la Pena finished fourth in the 200- yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.37 just falling short of the top-three. De Groote Tavares finished in the top-five of the 100-yard backstroke with at time of 58.52. In the 200-yard IM, Farkas (2:08.07) and De Groote Tavares (2:09.18) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, and Mari Aoki’s time of 2:10.82 gave the Lobos three top-10 finishers as Aoki finished eighth. Raine Gavino placed sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall at 2:25.90.
The Lobos next meet will be at home on Friday, October 26th at 1 p.m. against Northern Arizona.
