Baker assists on pair of goals in 3-3 tie with UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team scored three goals for the second-straight game, but the Lobos (7-5-2, 3-2-2 MW) were only able to come away with a tie on Friday night at UNLV as the Rebels (8-5-3, 2-3-2 MW) notched a pair of second-half goals to force the draw.

Three different Lobos scored in the game for UNM with Cami Floth, Jessie Hix and Gwen Maly all finding the back of the net. Each goal was assisted as well with Leilani Baker accounting for two of the assists and Jennifer Munoz with the other.

The scoring got started for the Lobos early in the game as Gwen Maly hit a one-timer in the 10th minute for her sixth goal of the season. It was Maly’s third goal in the last two games. In her most-recent game played, Maly scored twice and helped spur a Lobo 3-2 comeback win against Utah State. With six goals on the season, Maly now stands alone in the team-lead.

Maly’s opening goal was also the first of Baker’s two assists as the sophomore Rio Rancho native crossed the ball in to the waiting Maly.

In the 22nd minute, UNLV knotted the game on a Kaila Brinkman goal.

Nearing the end of the first half, the Lobos regained the scoring advantage as Jessie Hix headed home a ball that came from Munoz. Hix’s header had a lot on it and she was able to sail it past the Rebel’s keeping and into the top-left corner.

Coming out of the half, UNM doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute on Cami Floth’s third goal of the season. A majority of the work on the goal, however was conducted by Baker, who passed the ball off to Floth in front of the goal to register her second assist of the game.

That two-goal lead did not last long as the Rebels’ Georgia Kingman cut the deficit in half in the 61st minute as she scored on a great assist by Amanda Gailbraith.

In the 82nd minute, Kingman would strike again. This time she would benefit from a shot by Robin Pollard that hit the crossbar and caromed to Kingman for the putaway.

The first overtime did not yield many scoring chances for either team as the Lobos took the only shots that period, but none went on goal.

In the second overtime, UNM’s Alesia Garcia got a shot on goal in the 102nd minute but it was saved. In the 105th minute, UNLV had the best opportunity to end the game. Despite nothing statistically happening at that moment UNLV’s Michaela Morris had a chance inside the 6, but wasn’t able to ever get off a clean shot as the Lobos’ goal keeper Emily Johnson ran in to make a clutch “save”.

That stellar play by Johnson preserved the 3-3 tie.

UNM will now prepare for a quick turnaround and road game at Nevada on Sunday. First-kick of that one is scheduled for 2 p.m. MT.
