Men's Golf Finishes Strong in 64th Annual Tucker

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team turned in a strong finish on the final day of the 2018 William H. Tucker Invitational on Saturday, finishing fifth out of 17 teams while freshman Sam Choi tied for fourth overall in a field of 100.

The Lobos rebounded from a score of 297 in round one (T-11th) to a 277 in round two, cutting 20 strokes and rocketing up the leaderboard to tie for fifth. UNM combined for a score of 289 (+1) in the third to finish with a final score of 860 (-4). The Lobos also tied for the team lead in most eagles with three.

Choi shot a 72 in round one, a 68 in round two and a 71 in round three for his final total of 211 (-5), registering 14 birdies. Not only did Choi have an outstanding showing, senior Sean Carlon rebounded from a pair of tough rounds with a 69 in round three, following a 73 and a 75 in rounds one and two, respectively. He finished +1 on the day after closing the tournament with seven birdies on his last 11 holes.

“I am impressed with the patience our guys showed after the start Friday morning. Everyone would have liked to start better and be in contention, but the ability to bounce back and play well yesterday afternoon and today is very encouraging,” head coach Glen Millican said. “We have plenty to build on and areas to work on moving forward for the finish of the fall season.”

Sophomore Galven Green was the third finisher for UNM posting a total of 218 (+2), tied for 28th, followed by redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair (223; +7) and senior Augustin Holé (224 +8). Sinclair, Green and Holé each registered an eagle on the day.

The top individual on the day was junior Sam Dickey who finished +2 for a total of 218 (T25th). Dickey and Carlon finished the tournament with 11 birdies apiece.

The Lobos are set to return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 – Monday, Oct. 8 when they travel to Carrollton, Texas to compete at the Maridoe Intercollegiate hosted by North Texas.
