Big Second Round Has Lobos Tied for 5th at Tucker

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A pair of 18th-hole eagles, one by Galven Green and one by Augustin Holé, helped The University of New Mexico men’s golf team come back from a tough opening round to record the top second-round team total on Friday. The Lobos moved into a tie for 5th place at the 64th Annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate and will complete round three on Saturday.

UNM turned in an 11-under, 277 in the second round to put the Lobos in a tie for fifth place at -2, 12 shots behind top-team UNLV.  UNM is tied with Colorado and is three shots clear of fellow Mountain West member San Diego State, which is in seventh. 

UNLV leads the tournament with a combined team score of 562 (-14) followed by BYU and Pepperdine at -11 and -8, respectively. UNLV’s Harry Hall leads the competition with a two-round score of 135 (-9).

Freshman Sam Choi finished up the day fifth overall with a two-round score of 140 (-4) after jumping up 12 spots from round one to round two. Choi was one of three Lobos to break 70 in the second round. The freshman posted eight birdies on the day, even with junior Sam Dickey who shot a 146 (+2) after two rounds. Sophomore Galven Green followed Choi in the standings, posting a score of 142 (-2) and tying for eighth. Green registered a team-low 66 in round two.

UNM finished up round two with a an overall score of 574 (-2), tying for fifth after jumping up six spots throughout the day. Hole’ came in third for the Lobos, tied for 39th overall, and shot three over par for the Lobos. He was followed closely by senior Sean Carlon who shot four over tied for 46th overall.

Redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair rounded out the top five for the Lobos, posting a score of 150 (+6). The Lobos picked up four shots on the 18th with the eagles by Green and Holé. For Green, it was the cap on a brilliant round, where he shot a 66, 10-strokes clear of his initial round of 76. Green had five birdies along with the eagle in his second round, playing the back nine in four under. The back nine is where UNM made its late push as Green, Choi and Holé all combined to shoot nine under on the back nine. 

Redshirt-junior Mark MacGrath led UNM’s individuals with a score of 145, just one over par. He sunk seven birdies on the day and ended round two tied for 26th overall. Other UNM individuals were Sam Dickey (T32nd, 146), Roy Choi  (T52nd, 149), Ignacio Arcaya (T62nd, 150), Brad Cole (T93rd, 159), Jack Anderson (96th, 160) and Bowen Davis (T97th, 162).

Round three of the Tucker will commence at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. UNM’s five team members will tee off on holes 4-7, and the individuals will tee off starting on holes 16-18.

NOTES:  Along with Holé and Green, Sinclair also had an eagle, turning in a 3 on the opening hole of the tournament … Mark McGrath leads UNM in par-5 scoring at 4.50 (shooting -4).
