Men's and Women's Tennis Earn ITA Academic Honors

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — For The University of New Mexico men’s and women’s tennis teams, honors were aplenty as a total of nine student-athletes earned All-Academic honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and both teams earned team honors as well.

For the men’s tennis team, it had five student-athletes selected to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team. In addition, University’s men’s tennis team was named as an ITA All-Academic Team.
 
Tim Buttner, Jorge Escutia, Stepan Holis, Michael Tran, and Bart Van Leigsen were the five team members who were honored. In order to be named to the team, the player must maintain a GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale during the academic year.
 
The men’s tennis team was also named an All-Academic Team by having an average team GPA that exceeded 3.20.
 
“I am very proud of these men and the whole team” said head coach Ben Dunbar “It’s great to see our guys not only succeeding on the court, but also in the classroom.”
  
On the women’s side, it had four players selected to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team. The women’s tennis team was also honored as an ITA All-Academic Team.
 
Team members Yue Lin Chen, Natasha Munday, Danielle Quevedo, and Lauren Rich were the four team members honored by the ITA. In order to be named to this, the player must maintain a GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale during the academic year.
 
The women’s tennis team was also named as being an All-Academic Team by having an average team GPA that exceeded 3.20.
 
“Success both on and off the court is very important to us,” said head coach Stephanie Wooten-Quijada. “It’s great to see that these ladies are recognized for all the hard work they put in.”
