ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Some big crooked numbers early hurt New Mexico, as Arizona scored five in the second and never looked back as New Mexico lost a rare Monday night game 16-6 to the visiting Wildcats.

New Mexico got three home runs, by Jared Mang in the first, by Derek Marshall in the second and a three-run shot by Phillip Sikes in the sixth inning, but the Lobos were undone in the second and the fourth innings as Arizona put up five in the second and then seven in the fourth to put the game out of reach early.

In the second, James Harrington got the opening out of the inning, but then allowed four straight hits including a long two-run home run Cameron Cannon which made it 5-1.  After a walk, Harrington was lifted for Brian Coffey, and a pair of singles in the inning made it 6-1.

Coffey was solid in the third, and Marshall’s home run in the bottom of the second made it 6-2, but Arizona put up seven in the fourth to put the game out of reach early.  Coffey left after a leadoff double and a walk, and he was replaced by Chad Smith, but Smith scuffled throughout the inning.

Nick Quintana singled to load the bases, and then four straight walks and a wild pitch brought in four runs.  It would have been more but a seemingly wild pitch bounced off the back padded wall right to catcher Daniel Zakosek, who flipped to Smith for the out.

Cal Stevenson and Cannon hit RBi singles to make it 12-2, and then a sacrifice fly by Alfonso Rivas made it 13-2.

While the final line score wasn’t anything like what UNM wanted, the Lobos did get some good pitching performances.  Saturday starter Robert Gasser through a 1-2-3 sixth inning, and Malachi Emond did likewise in the seventh with two strikeouts.  Phillip Sikes came in from center field to pitch and threw a scoreless inning, as did closer Christian Tripp.

Eight different Lobos picked up a hit, with five singles to go along with the three home runs.

UNM hosts Fresno State for a big conference series this weekend at Santa Ana Star Field.  The Lobos will host Fresno State on Friday at 6:30 p.m., on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon.  UNM also hosts New Mexico State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

NOTES:  The home run for Sikes was his first career bomb … UNM’s three home runs were its most this season.
