RANCHO MIRAGE, C.A. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished in fourth place at the Mountain West Conference Tournament at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course on Wednesday, April 18th.
“As a team we played well for 12-holes,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We couldn’t keep a solid round going on the back nine and if you look at our scores, all the trouble came on the back side each day.”
New Mexico ended each round in the top-5 and collectively, the team’s first two rounds were very strong among this competitive field. After totaling at 38-over 902 [298,300,302] over the course of the three days of play, the Lobos earned their eighth top-10 finish of 2017-18 season.
“Ingrid and Alex played great today,” mentioned Trujillo. “They had a positive attitude this week and I think that really helped Alex play steady all tournament. She only had one bad hole in the final round that cost her a couple shots but she was able to hold it together. Ingrid had a nice birdie late in her round on 16 to help her shoot even and have a nice finish for the championship.”
The two Lobo seniors had an excellent tournament and both lead the team on the leaderboard after each round. Ingrid Gutierrez was tied for second after round one and fell only slightly down after rounds two and three. Her final score of 3-over 219 [71,76,72] left her tied for sixth alongside San Diego State’s, Georgia Lacey. Alexandra Moisand stayed within the top-10 after closing out her three rounds with a total score of 5-over 221 [74-72-75]. Gutierrez and Moisand were incredible leaders for this 2017-18 roster and their experience and vast knowledge of the collegiate field added to the overall successes of this team.
Sophomore Reva Morris and freshman, Caroline Jansson experienced their first MWC Tournament together as Lobos and they both left tied with each other for 25th. Morris and Jansson totaled a final score of 16-over 232 [77,76,79]. Both of these players brought something new to the roster and have added a lot to the program in just their first seasons wearing the cherry and silver. Fellow teammate, junior, Darian Zachek was only three strokes over Morris and Jansson with her final score of 19-over 235 [76,81,78]. Zachek earned MW Golfer of the Week twice this season and will be taking on more of a leadership role for the team as they head into the 2018-19 season this fall.
Overall, New Mexico had a solid showing at this year’s conference tournament and capped off their regular season with some top finishes alongside very competitive fields. As the Lobos come back from Palm Springs, they will be preparing for the end of season banquet which is happening Friday, April 20th.
